ECU Cloning Service
When an ECU fails, the choices are not always obvious. A new unit from the dealer is expensive. A second-hand unit from a breaker’s will not work without the right data. An ECU clone service transfers the original data to a replacement unit, so the vehicle recognises it as its own and starts without the need for dealer-level programming.
Getting it right starts with sourcing the correct donor unit, part numbers need to match the original exactly. From there, the immobiliser data transfer is carried out using specialist diagnostic equipment, on-site at your location.

What Does ECU Cloning Cover?
Faulty or
Damaged ECU
When an ECU fails due to electrical faults or component damage, the vehicle’s immobiliser data needs to carry over to any replacement unit. Fitting a blank or uncoded unit without that data will result in a vehicle that fails to start.
Cloning reads the data from the original unit and writes it exactly to a donor ECU of the correct type. Provided the original can still be read, the replacement is matched to your vehicle without the need for main dealer involvement.
Second-Hand
Replacement ECU
A second-hand ECU sourced from a breaker carries the immobiliser data and coding from the vehicle it came out of, not yours. Your vehicle’s security system will not recognise it, and the vehicle will not start.
Cloning solves this by overwriting the donor unit with your vehicle’s exact data. Once complete, the replacement behaves as though it were the original, with no additional ECU programming required after fitting.
Complex Jobs
& Escalations
Engine control units are not always a standalone fault. Some jobs begin as a key or immobiliser fault and escalate once diagnostics reveal a faulty ECU. In those cases, replacement and cloning become part of a wider repair rather than a separate service.
Whatever the route to it, the cloning process is the same: the existing data is extracted, transferred and verified on the replacement unit before anything is signed off.

FAQ
Most frequently asked questions
Can ECU Data Transfers be carried out if the original unit is completely dead?
It depends on whether the original ECU can still be read. If it has failed entirely and no data can be extracted, cloning in the traditional sense is not possible. In that situation, alternative approaches may still be available depending on the vehicle and the nature of the fault. An initial assessment will confirm what options exist.
Will I need to visit a dealer once the ECU is cloned?
No. A properly cloned ECU carries all of the original vehicle data including immobiliser coding, so it does not require additional programming or matching at a dealership. Once installed, the vehicle should start and run normally.
Is ECU cloning the same as remapping or tuning?
No. Cloning transfers the existing data from one unit to another. It does not alter or modify that data in any way. Remapping changes the software to adjust performance; cloning replicates what was already there.
How much does ECU cloning cost?
Pricing varies depending on the vehicle, the complexity of the work and the time involved. A rough estimate is provided once the job has been assessed. There is no call-out charge.
